5 Ways to Add Essential Oils to Your Chiropractic Practice

If you have landed on this blog post, you’re likely a Chiropractor who is interested in discovering more about how to support your patients with essential oils. Essential oils have taken off in popularity in the last ten years. They are natural solutions that are easy to use, which is appealing to your patients. They can be utilized to support both physical and emotional health in response to stress or as a daily healthy habit. As a Chiropractor, it is smart to not only have a basic understanding of essential oils but also be able to address the needs and desires of your patients when they arise.

Eighteen years as a family-focused chiropractor has taught me a lot about the needs of people who wanted to take care of their health naturally. Our focus in the office was (and still is) to teach patients about the benefits of long-term chiropractic care. Even if patients are being adjusted regularly, the importance of self care and healthy lifestyle choices in-between adjustments is paramount. Your patients will look towards options - synthetic or natural - if they have health issues that come up. Having the knowledge to share with them about the power of essential oils will create a deeper relationship as it adds to their understanding of health beyond their adjustment.

I retired from active Chiropractic practice after a wrist injury that made it increasingly difficult to adjust. In the three years leading up to my departure from practice, I had been using dōTERRA oils in practice as well as building a residual income within the business model on the side. I used oils minimally in practice, when needed, but it was a tremendous support for my patient’s care. I wrote all about my five favourite oils to use in your practice HERE, including how they align so beautifully with Chiropractic.

For the purpose of this blog post, I want to dive into how to implement or add essential oils into your practice. Keeping in mind that your time is valuable and that you want to focus your time on your patient while in the adjusting room, these tips can be as passive or active as you wish to have them.

Why add Essential Oils to Your Practice?

There are many reasons to start using essential oils within your practice. These range from the health benefits to scent marketing to creating a residual income.

Health Benefits

The health benefits of essential oils are well known. They have been proven in scientific study to reduce airborne contaminates, ease stress levels, and promote feelings of well-being. Focusing on oils that support your immune system, reduce stress, and create a welcoming environment are a great way to start bringing oils into your practice. Health care practices as well as hospitals are increasingly using essential oils as part of their care plans for patients.

All Natural Cleaning

You can make non-toxic, all natural cleaning supplies with your essential oils in less than one minute. I shared my favourite all-purpose spray recipe using dōTERRA oils HERE.

Scent Marketing

There is an abundance of research to indicate the connection between aroma and business practice. It helps build value, increase team productivity, decrease stress and improve satisfaction for both patients and staff. Scent Marketing is a huge trend amongst retail businesses however it is widely used within the health care industry too.

Residual Income

Choosing to bring dōTERRA essential oils into your practice can create a residual income between a few hundred to a few thousands dollars or more per month. I work with many other Chiropractors to show them how to successfully implement using essential oils in their practices.

Five Ways to Add Essential Oils Into Your Practice

Are you ready to dive in? Here are five easy ways to implement essential oils into your chiropractic practice.

  1. Diffusing Essential Oils at Front Desk and/or Throughout Practice

Diffusing is the most popular and easiest way to use essential oils. It is as simple as adding 2-4 drops of essential oil to a diffuser, adding water, and turning it on. This can be done each day at the front desk as part of your “start up” daily procedures. Essential oils that are light and refreshing (citrus oils) are generally good oils to use as they aren’t overwhelming and they promote good feelings. By creating an “essential oil of the week”, you can passively teach them about the essential oils you are diffusing and why they are important.

  2. With/On Patients

Using essential oils with patients who so desire is a great way to teach self care and home health care habits. Deep Blue helps to ease pain and inflammation, Balance helps to ground, and Adaptiv helps to manage stress,. Three simple examples of how to show patients how to use oils for daily use.

  3. On Headrest Paper

One of the simplest ways to use essential oils is to add a drop of Easy Air or Eucalyptus to the to the headrest paper roll before patients lie down. You can do this yourself or encourage patients to do so. This reduces the chance of clogged sinuses during an adjustment (or massage if you have an RMT as part of your team)

  4. Teach Classes

Chiropractors are natural teachers. The word “doctor” comes from the Latin word “docco”, which means to teach. We are beautifully positioned to teach about different health practices on a visit to visit basis OR in a class setting. Hosting a regular essential oils class for your patients and community continues to position you as the expert in natural health care.

  5. Retail Sales

Setting up a retail section in your practice is an easy way to add to your practice income. Offering essential oils and products for cellular nutrition, pain, stress, inflammation, and immune support is a popular way to offer oils amongst Chiropractors.

For those interested in pursuing the dōTERRA business opportunity, it aligns very well to your current Chiropractic practice. Here’s the truth. I went from paying for my monthly essential oils to making over $20,000 a month by building a residual income with dōTERRA. I began by diffusing essential oils in our practice to educating about the oils and then eventually choosing to build with the dōTERRA business opportunity. It is what allowed me to walk away from practice after my wrist injury, knowing that I would continue to make a great income each month while serving my community in a new way.

One of the big lessons of 2020 was that relying on a brick and mortar business only isn’t ideal for anyone. Thriving businesses faltered or crumbled quickly after just a few weeks and months of not being able to practice. While most Chiropractors have protection against illness, injury, or death, no one expected the circumstances we all experienced. The vulnerability of not diversifying your income opportunities is real. If you could create a residual income each month that aligns with your Chiropractic principles, would that interest you?

Having worked with many Chiropractors over the last few years reach the goals they had set out for introducing oils into their practice, I believe it’s perfect fit.
